Guwahati ( Saurabh Jyoti Sharma) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (June 26, 2026) asserted that his government was relentlessly cracking down on the trafficking and the abuse of drugs.
He said the government was working to safeguard the future of the youth and save them from the menace of drug abuse.
Today, we mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a subject which our govt is working on very closely with a relentless crackdown against drugs,” Mr. Sarma said in a post on X.
We remain committed to preserving the future of our youth and saving them from this social destruction,” he added.
The Assam government had been focusing on checking drug abuse, with intensified drives launched since Mr. Sarma became the chief minister for the first time in 2021.
In the first five years of Mr. Sarma’s government, Assam has made over 24,000 drug-related arrests and seized drugs worth more than Rs 3,001 crore, over seven times the recoveries made between 2011 and 2015, the then Finance Minister Ajanta Neog had said in her Budget speech in February this year.
